The video, filmed by a concerned citizen, shows the truck recklessly speeding, overtaking vehicles in the oncoming lane, and crossing the barrier line all before eventually colliding with a bakkie and driving away.
Due to the extreme danger the driver’s actions placed on other motorists, the Newcastillian – Online News contacted the truck’s holding company.
However, after multiple phone calls and a media enquiry sent via email, no comment was forthcoming at the time of publication.
While no serious injuries were reported following the clip, ER24’s Ziyaad Warasally explained the speeding motorist endangered other motorists’ lives, and the matter could have ended badly. Adding to this, Warasally highlighted that incidents involving trucks on the Majuba Pass were nothing new.
“There are quite a few truck accidents on the Majuba Pass. I feel with the influx of side tipper trucks which transport coal, there should be more law enforcement focused on maintaining the speed in the area,” he emphasised.
Adding to this, the Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Vusi Shongwe, has condemned the truck driver’s actions in the strongest possible terms, stating that the driver placed several lives in danger, through his driving.
Furthermore, the department highlighted that the driver has been found and arrested.
“People like the driver in question, do not deserve to have driving licences. Crashes that involve trucks often produce many fatalities especially when public transport is involved,” he said.
The MEC adds that truck owners should assess the drivers they hire and instil a sense of responsible driving in them to ensure that they always adhere to the rules of the road.
Moving forward and to ensure similar incidents do not repeat in the future, the Department stated that it will be engaging with the owner of the truck. Additionally, the department will also have a programme to engage other truck owners to ensure safety on the roads.
