On Friday morning, 3 December 2021, traffic on the N3 Road came to a standstill after multiple truck drivers parked their vehicles across the freeway, obstructing both carriageways.

Agitating the matter further, the drivers then left their vehicles, causing traffic to come to a standstill for the entire day.

Brigadier Jay Naicker, the KZN provincial SAPS spokesperson, claims that the suspects snatched the various truck drivers keys, rendering them immobile for an extended period.

Moreover, he explains that the SAPS, the N3TC and RTI attended to the incident and removed the vehicles. “Various specialised units from throughout the province were mobilised, and also assisted in getting the trucks moved out of the road which resulted in traffic beginning to flow.”

Many of the perpetrators will now face legal repercussions. “Twelve truck drivers, whose vehicles were obstructing the flow of traffic and who defied instructions by police officials to remove their trucks, were subsequently arrested.”

The suspects now face charges for contravention of the Criminal Law Amendment Act – Infrastructure contravention, Intimidation, Economic Sabotage, and contravention of the Road Traffic Act.

The accused will appear in the Ladysmith Magistrates Court today, 6 December 2021.
