Firefighters were dispatched to Newcastle’s Industrial Area during the early hours of Monday, 20 July 2026, after a plastic factory on Faraday Street was engulfed in flames.
The fire reportedly spread rapidly through the premises, placing nearby businesses at risk and requiring emergency crews to contain the blaze before it could extend beyond the property.
According to information provided to Newcastillian News, emergency services were alerted to the fire at approximately 1am and immediately dispatched to the scene. However, a substantial section of the factory had already been damaged by the time firefighters arrived.
“By the time we arrived on the scene, the fire had damaged a substantial part of the factory. Fortunately, no injuries were reported,” a local firefighter confirmed.
The blaze has since been contained, with attention now turning to determining how it started.
Firefighters confirmed that the cause remains unknown and that forensic investigators are expected to conduct a detailed examination of the premises.
While arson is not currently suspected, a neighbouring business owner, who asked not to be named, raised concerns about an apparent increase in cable theft in the area.
The business owner suggested that the fire may have been started accidentally by someone attempting to cut electrical wiring, potentially creating a spark that ignited nearby grass or combustible material.
However, this remains unconfirmed, and firefighters cautioned against drawing conclusions before the forensic investigation has been completed.
Newcastillian News also approached the Newcastle South African Police Service for official comment. However, no response had been received at the time of publication.
With no injuries reported and the immediate danger contained, the cause of the Faraday Street factory fire will now depend on the findings of the forensic investigation.
