Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Road users beware, law enforcement will be in full swing this Easter Weekend.

On Wednesday, 13 April 2022, a multi-disciplinary operation launched on Allen Street at the N11 intersection near Hilldrop.

In attendance, traffic officers from Newcastle Municipality and the Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) were joined by paramedics from various Emergency Medical Services, officers from the Newcastle SAPS, the Community Policing Forum (CPF) and South African National Taxi Association (SANTACO).

Launching the initiative, Newcastle Mayor Cllr Xolani Dube explained the purpose of the operation was of the utmost importance. “We are urging motorists and road users to be conscious of the lives that could be lost, if they are not mindful and committed to the road laws.”

The Mayor further explained that law enforcement would be out in full force this long weekend to ensure road safety was brought to the forefront.

“I have been all over KZN and I have seen accidents that could have been avoided if law enforcement had been present,” he said, highlighting that law enforcement is tasked with the duty of being highly visible and active during the festive weekend.

With this said, Newcastle Municipality’s Deputy Mayor, Cllr Musa Thwala, extended his heartfelt thanks to law enforcement for everything they did. “Traffic officers are doing a good job. If they were not on the road 24 hours a day, we would be in trouble.”

Furthermore, Chief Traffic Officer Ashok Anandhaw noted that traffic officers would be taking proactive steps to ensure minimal incidents over the long weekend. “I am pledging that we will be doing our best to ensure road safety is maintained, and eliminate and alleviate all congestion and incidents that may occur,” he said.

Newcastle Police Spokesperson Lizzy Arumugam highlighted that the local police would also be implementing operations to ensure crime is kept to a minimum.

With law enforcement working together to ensure safety, the event on Wednesday morning, 13 April 2022, saw the Newcastle Municipality’s leadership start the operations with road safety awareness, handing out pamphlets and encouraging motorists to practice caution.
