On Monday morning, 21 June 2021, the Dannhauser Municipality issued a public notice to the Dannhauser community, notifying them of water interruptions affecting areas such as Annandale Mbabane and Rooiport.
Deputy Director of Public Relations for the municipality, Sbonelo Cebekhulu, explains that the issue stems from vandalism at Mbabane Pump Station, stating criminals had stolen cables leaving the system damaged. Adding to this, he says, “Dannhauser town also still has a challenge. The reservoir level is at 15%. The team is working against the clock to establish the cause. Water tankers are being dispatched to assist all the affected areas.”
While the District Municipality is working on the issue, Cebekhulu points out that this is the second pump station that unscrupulous individuals have targeted in a matter of days. On Friday, 18 June 2021, the municipality had to inform Dannhauser residents about water outages due to the Vanjash Pump Station being vandalised and cables being stolen.
Wards 11, 6 and a portion of Ward 13 – Arial, Emfundweni and Kilkeel, and other areas dependant on the Caca reservoir were affected.
When looking at the financial implications of the constant repair work, Cebekhulu states that costs have not yet been determined. Still, all main cables have been stolen, leaving the pumps non-operational. “This means all areas supplied through these pumps will be without water for an extended period.” Due to the seriousness of the matter, he points out that these criminal acts have been reported to the police for investigation. “We request communities to assist with information that can lead to the arrest of these criminals. We further request communities to assist with the safeguarding of the water infrastructure.”
Hoping that law enforcement will capture those responsible for the theft of the cables, Cebekhulu states that anyone with information can either contact the police or contact the local government entity on 034 329 7400 or contact them via their Facebook page, Amajuba District Municipality.
