A cold front is set to sweep across KwaZulu-Natal later this week, with the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issuing warnings of isolated showers and thundershowers on Monday, 13 July 2026, ahead of the system’s arrival.
The agency has also cautioned that the cold front will bring strong, damaging winds.
This follows a comprehensive seven-day forecast released by SAWS on Monday, 13 July 2026.
According to the outlook, initial showers and thundershowers are anticipated from Monday, 13 July 2026.
The province will then enjoy a brief period of more pleasant weather conditions on Tuesday, 14 July, before the cold front fully makes landfall on Friday, 17 July 2026.
Once the system establishes itself, isolated showers and rain are expected along the south coast, coupled with severe winds.
The front will subsequently advance across the rest of the province on Saturday, before clearing towards Sunday evening. In the interim, SAWS has indicated a 30% probability of early-week rain and potential thunderstorms starting Monday, 13 July 2026.
This initial band of weather is expected to impact Newcastle, Ladysmith, and Utrecht.
While Tuesday, 14 July 2026, is forecast to offer pleasant weather, temperatures will begin a downward trend from Wednesday, 15 July 2026.
Cool conditions alongside light to moderate winds are anticipated through the middle of the week. This pattern is expected to persist into the evening, after which the advancing cold front will usher in notably colder weather and increased rainfall on Friday, 17 July 2026, with the most significant effects on Saturday.
Ahead of Friday’s sharp drop in temperature, timely preparation is essential to mitigate potential localised disruptions.
Taking practical precautions during the milder conditions on Tuesday and Wednesday — specifically by securing exposed property and protecting livestock — will ensure communities are fully prepared well before the severe weather arrives.
Given the unpredictable nature of winter weather fronts, ongoing vigilance is critical.
KZN Residents are therefore urged to consistently monitor the South African Weather Service (SAWS) and regional media channels for real-time updates and any escalating advisories as the week progresses.
