The community of KwaMdakane, under the Dannhauser Municipality, will soon benefit from a state-of-the-art library, costing the KZN Department of Arts, Culture, Sport and Recreation (KZNDAC) over R31million.
The project aims to bring new development to the community while aiding in job creation. This will be noted in the temporary rotational openings during construction and permanent positions once completed.
On Friday, 16 April 2021, at the Thusong Centre, KwaMdakane, the official introduction of the contractor for the project was announced along with the soil-turning ceremony.
The event was graced by the MEC of the Department, Hlengiwe Mavimbela, the Mayor of Dannhauser, Cllr Jabu Khumalo, Ward Councillor, Surprise Sibisi and other officials to officiate the proceedings.
The Thusong Centre is the epicentre of an integrated service delivery approach by the government and the highly anticipated library will benefit locals and school-going children in the four neighbouring wards within KwaMdakane.
In her address, MEC Mavimbela highlighted that library services form an essential part of the Department’s outreach to educate, benefit and develop the community. “Through such initiatives, the Department is also heeding to a call from the government that no child should reach the age of 10-years without knowing how to read properly. These are community libraries that seek to benefit the public. It is also befitting that this project is implemented in the year where we are celebrating and commemorating our much-respected struggle stalwart hence the theme “The Year of Charlotte Maxeke.”
Moreover, Mavimbela added, this momentous occasion was thanks to the Dannhauser Mayor, Cllr Jabu Khumalo. “Her push, passion and dedication to see this project finally come to fruition led us to this moment. She did this not for her current political standing as Mayor but as a passionate citizen of Dannhauser who wants to see development and empowerment of her people.” She added that even when the Mayor is no longer within the chambers of the municipality, this will be one of those projects she will look back at and beam with pride.
This library will boast, among many things, a study area for 200 people, a mini-library for the blind, a computer room with FREE WIFI, ten ablution facilities (8 for the community and 2 for staff members), security comprising of CCTV cameras, fencing with a clear view, a guardhouse, ample parking and a ramp both for disabled and non-disabled people.
The contractor, Sibabili Magubane of Magubane Plant & Contractors and his Project Manager, Siboniso Sibisi, were given a deadline of 18-months to complete the said project.
MEC Mavimbela assured that this development is budgeted for by her Department, and there should be no delays from the contractor.
