Four months after the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation, commonly known as the Hawks, launched an investigation involving Newcastle Municipality, the unit has confirmed that the inquiry remains active and has entered a sensitive stage.

Responding to questions from Newcastillian News, Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale said investigators could not disclose further information without potentially affecting the ongoing process.

“For this reason, we are unable to share further details at this time to avoid compromising the process,” Mogale stated.

The investigation was formally launched on 24 March 2026, when Hawks investigators arrived at the Newcastle Municipality’s offices. At the time, senior municipal officials were attending a strategic planning session at Grey Goose Game Lodge.

Since then, the Hawks have provided little information about the precise scope of the investigation or the individuals whose conduct may be under scrutiny.

However, municipal sources have alleged that the inquiry is examining the conduct of certain politicians and officials. The allegations include claims that municipal structures and public resources may have been used to advance private interests.

Yet, it is important to remember that these claims have not been tested in court, and no finding of wrongdoing has been announced by the Hawks.

Following the launch of the investigation, Newcastle Municipality indicated that it would cooperate with the authorities.

Furthermore, according to reports, the Hawks subsequently conducted a search at the home of the owner of a Newcastle-based road construction company that has secured several municipal contracts.

This followed allegations that the business owner may have benefited from irregular dealings involving senior municipal officials.

These allegations remain under investigation, and the Hawks have not publicly confirmed whether any charges are being considered.

Jointly, no arrests or formal charges linked to the investigation have been publicly announced.

  1. Abuse of power by municipality officials, award tenders to their connections in order to inflate the prices and drain the public purse. Stealing the the money of the poor people. They must account for their actions.

  2. Let us hope that there are arrests and jail time for the guilty miscreants and not just an eye-wash.

  3. Have you seen the cars that they are driving.
There is no way they all could afford such luxury living on a normal salary.
The service delivery and abnormal water and lights bill….
It’s just painful to watch how arrogantly they continue to decay our name in South Africa and their “Need for Greed” just worsens more and more.
Please give us some of that Muti you’re using because we are suffering here man.

  4. We are happy to hear such news as the community but can the Hawks also go to Majuba Municipality, the rot that side is sickening.

  5. This is the reason why the people who actually deserve these jobs don’t get it based on Thier qualifications it’s all done inside the municipality has become a family and a friend thing

  6. Lets be serious, this investigation will get nowhere, no one will get charge and the money will never be recovered, this is a syndicate thats wrecking the town, everyone knows the mayor is corrupt to the core, the evidence is right infront of everyone yet no justice will come to him.

  7. Its sad at the MUNISPALITY ppl cant get a job cause its more of a family thing its not wat u knw its who u knw very very unfair ppl are greedy organizing jobs for their FAMILIES sad but true

  8. The SIU had gone to the NPA offices before the old ArcelorMittal road to investigate the dockets that had been opened and not seen through to the he ends of Justice, and then the Hawks came back to the Newcastle Municipal Buildings to extract files and documents, even raiding offices in the name of Justice!

The cries of Newcastle West were heard and seen on eNCA television screens during the November protests, where a memorandum of demands was sent to the Mayor, with relevant reasons set forth by the Newcastle West Rate-payers who had been subsidising the Township and Rural Areas of Amajuba District for the past, I don’t know how may years! Let us pray the Hawks are done before “this November’s” elections so the Residents will be conscious of the current failing government!
