Following three days of silence, the Newcastle Municipality has officially addressed the ongoing investigations, confirming that the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) conducted an authorised operation at municipal premises on Tuesday, 24 March 2026.
Discussing the investigations, the Municipality highlighted that it recognises the constitutional mandate of law enforcement agencies and affirmed its commitment to accountability, transparency, and the rule of law.

“In this regard, the institution is extending its full cooperation to the investigative authorities to ensure that due process is upheld without hindrance,” stated the government entity’s Communications Unit on Thursday afternoon, 26 March 2026.
Furthermore, the Municipality emphasised that the investigation remains active and ongoing.
In this context, the Communications Unit added, “Accordingly, the Municipality will refrain from engaging in commentary that may prejudice or compromise the integrity of the process. All matters will be addressed within the confines of applicable legal and governance frameworks.”
Looking ahead, the Municipality confirmed that further updates will be communicated through official municipal platforms as and when appropriate.
While the Newcastle Municipality cannot provide additional insight into the investigations at present, the Hawks reportedly conducted a search at the residence of a Newcastle-based roads construction company, which has received multiple contracts from the Municipality. Allegations have suggested that the business owner benefitted through irregular dealings with senior municipal officials.
Hawks National Spokesperson, Brigadier Mbambo, said that while she could not provide further details on the swoop on the business owner’s home, she noted that no arrests have been made as yet and that investigations are ongoing.

Looking back, as reported by Newcastillian News, the Hawks arrived at the municipal offices on Tuesday, 24 March 2026, shortly after 9:00, when the municipality’s senior leadership attended a strategic planning session at Grey Goose Game Lodge.
As more comes to light, Newcastillian News will keep you updated. Until then, let us know your thoughts below.
