Starting a family and watching it grow can be a thrilling adventure for newlyweds. However, deciding on the ideal number of children can be perplexing. Yet, for a woman centuries ago, the concept of limitation was unfamiliar, as she brought dozens of children into the world throughout her lifetime.
Valentina Vassilyeva holds the esteemed title of the most prolific mother ever, according to the Guinness World Records.
She and her husband, Feodor Vassilyev, from Shuya, Russia, welcomed an impressive 69 children into the world before she passed away at 76 years old.
Born in 1707, Valentina became the first wife of Feodor, who was a humble peasant. According to Guinness World Records: Valentina gave birth to 16 pairs of twins, seven sets of triplets, and four sets of quadruplets. Surprisingly, 67 of these bundles of joy survived infancy, with one pair of twins tragically passing away.
Now, you might think this story sounds like something out of a fairytale – but Guinness World Records insists it’s all true and they’ve got the receipts to prove it.
The Monastery of Nikolsk in Moscow recorded every single one of these births, confirming the mind-boggling achievement.
Nevertheless, after Valentina’s passing in 1782, according to Wikipedia, Feodor didn’t let his fathering skills go to waste. He tied the knot again and allegedly had 18 more children with his second wife. And get this – she supposedly had six pairs of twins and two sets of triplets, bringing Feodor’s total offspring count to a whopping 87.
It is exceptional to note that during a time when a delivery room was nothing more than a doctor with unwashed hands, a cigarette hanging from his mouth and some dirty bedsheets, how this woman not only survived the births but went on to have multiple children.
According to data, during this time around 40%-50% of children died, meaning that Valentina achieved more than just the record for children born with 67 of her 69 kids surviving.
Today, across the globe parents are soaked in knowledge about the do’s and don’ts of pregnancy and are educated on the lifestyle required and how to ensure an infant flourishes. I would say, using Valentina as an example, modern parents need to reflect on how good society has it today, versus the fears and horrors from a few hundred years ago.
But, with all of this in mind, what are your thoughts on this extraordinary tale of one woman birthing 69 children?
