Nominate an outstanding Mediclinic Newcastle nurse for a Daisy Award

Nurses stand as the unsung heroes of the healthcare realm, pouring their hearts and souls into nurturing their patients’ health, often stepping far beyond their duties with unparalleled dedication. Their invaluable contributions frequently remain underappreciated.

Yet, now beckons a golden opportunity for you to shine a spotlight on a nurse whose extraordinary compassion and commitment have rightfully distinguished them, with the esteemed international Daisy Award, celebrating their profound impact on the lives they’ve touched.

The Daisy Award stands as a badge of honour, specifically designed to acknowledge the incredible nurses whose empathy and expertise in patient care set them apart. Initiated by the Daisy Foundation, this accolade was inspired by Patrick Barnes’ family’s heartfelt appreciation towards the nurses who offered loving support and care during his challenging health battle. This prestigious accolade acts as a profound expression of gratitude, spotlighting nurses who transcend their professional duties to provide extraordinary devotion to their patients and their loved ones.

The award not only recognises their clinical skills but also their infinite compassion and dedication to enhancing the lives of those in their care. It is a tribute to those in the nursing profession who exemplify the highest level of humanity, capturing the essence of nursing in its most noble form.

Nursing Executive for Mediclinic Southern Africa, Monyebodi Ngoepe explained, “The Daisy Awards are one of the best ways to recognise the efforts and work of the nursing staff. And what makes it truly special, is that the nominations come from the patients and their family.”

In light of this, Mediclinic has shifted away from its Nursing Excellence Awards and is now embracing the internationally renowned, Daisy Awards.

Discussing this transformation, Colleen Schoeman of Mediclinic Newcastle elucidated that this shift marks a transition to a recognition program that places a greater emphasis on patient-centred care. “By soliciting nominations directly from patients, families, and clients, the Daisy Awards ensure that recognition is based on real-life experiences and heartfelt appreciation. This not only fosters a stronger connection between patients and caregivers but also emphasises the importance of compassionate care and patient satisfaction,” Schoeman explained.

She added that for nursing staff, the transition to the Daisy Awards means that their efforts and contributions will be acknowledged and celebrated throughout the year, rather than just during designated award periods. “Being recognised by those they directly care for can be incredibly meaningful and motivating for nurses, reinforcing their dedication to providing high quality, patient-centred care,” stated Schoeman.

Furthermore, the focus on detailed criteria during the nomination phase fosters an environment of excellence and ongoing advancement among the nursing staff.

Therefore, Schoeman pointed out that by spotlighting instances of extraordinary compassionate care and clinical proficiency, the Daisy Awards not only acknowledge individual accomplishments but also motivate others within the team to aspire towards distinction in their own work.

“Overall, the transition to the Daisy Awards at Mediclinic Newcastle represents a positive step towards fostering a culture of caring, patient satisfaction, and professional excellence within the healthcare institution,” explained Schoeman.

To qualify for a Daisy Award, nursing staff must meet strict criteria, which are as follows:

  • Every nurse registered with the nursing council (SANC or HPCNA) and delivering nursing services in MCSA facilities is eligible for nomination, encompassing nursing students and agency nurses. The objective is to acknowledge remarkable instances of compassionate care and clinical distinction exhibited in their interactions with patients, which ought to be evident through:
  • Model empathy while demonstrating a caring attitude in all situations
  • Demonstrating extraordinary clinical skills in the delivery of compassionate patient care.
  • Having made a significant difference in the life of a patient/patient’s family.
  • Establishing a special connection with the patient and family.

It’s important to mention that up to 15 nominations can be recognised each year, from which three winners will be selected. These winners will be awarded a green bag containing a certificate, a copy of the nomination letter from the patient or family, a signed note of appreciation, a Daisy Award winners’ pin, and a Healers Touch Sculpture.

Moreover, Ngoepe emphasised that, as an international honour, the winners would gain global recognition and have their achievements showcased on the Daisy Foundation’s website, accompanied by the nominating patient’s explanation detailing why that particular nurse was deserving of the award.

Additionally, she noted that the winning nurse would also be made eligible for a variety of benefits related to professional development, education, and wellness.

With this in mind, Schoeman highlighted that winning the Daisy Awards holds significant meaning for nurses and healthcare professionals. “It signifies acknowledgment and appreciation for their exceptional dedication, compassion, and skill in patient care. More than just a recognition of clinical expertise, winning a Daisy Award represents the profound impact nurses have on the lives of patients and their families during vulnerable times.”

The celebration recognising the winners is set to align with International Nurses Day which as noted by Schoeman, falls on 12 May 2024. Given that May 12th this year is a Sunday, the event has been thoughtfully planned for 10 May 2024, to provide a fitting tribute to the remarkable efforts of these devoted professionals. Additionally, each nominee acknowledged will be awarded a nomination pin to proudly wear all year, symbolising their commendable achievements.

Therefore, with the Daisy Awards in mind, Mediclinic Newcastle encourages the community to vote for the nurse they believe most merits recognition.
