Newcastle Municipality is now under new control, effective Monday, 22 November 2021, with high hopes riding on the newly elected’s shoulders.

With these new faces taking old seats, the Newcastillian – Online News, over the next while, introduces the various new municipal heads to ensure you are up to date with who is running your city.

Who is Newcastle Municipality Chief Whip?

Faizel Cassim, the government entity’s newly elected Chief Whip, despite experiencing some turmoil in the run-up to the local elections, was overjoyed when he was elected. “I basically knew it was coming, but when it was announced, the feeling was indescribable. It is truly exciting.”

He does acknowledge, though, that the mantle he now wears carries a great deal of responsibility. “As the Chief Whip, I have to assist in resolving all conflicts that may arise in council. I am also the link between administration and council.”

Furthermore, Cassim emphasises that he must ensure that the newly elected leadership and councillors follow the regulations of their respective positions.

With this in mind, the Chief Whip says it is his responsibility to guarantee that all political parties are united around a single goal: advancing Newcastle’s progress and putting the community first.

“All of us took an oath for the upliftment of the community, and I take that oath seriously,” declares Cassim.

With coalitions formed between the IFP, DA, ActionSA, NFP, TSSA and VFplus, Cassim notes this partnership is more than one which sees the political parties share power in the municipality. Instead, he emphasises, it is a pact in which politicians have pledged to put the community’s needs ahead of their own political ambitions.

Cassim says he’ll personally ensure that the coalition stays in place when it comes to this relationship. “While I stand under correction, it is the first time in 22 years where a new party has taken over the municipality. With this in mind, people have high standards for change. But people must bear in mind, a lot of damage has been caused over the years and change will not happen overnight.”

Cassim encourages the community to be patient during this transition period, as there are various hurdles to be handled and conquered.

According to the Chief Whip, one of the most significant roadblocks is the municipality’s financial predicament. He emphasises that this is a stumbling block that the new leadership is keen to overcome as soon as feasible.

Concluding, Newcastle’s newly elected Chief Whip tells the Newcastle community that their best interests will always be his top priority during his mandate.

The Newcastillian – Online News wishes Faizel Cassim the best of luck in his new endeavour, and we look forward to reporting on his and the municipality’s successes.
