15 Injured as Bakkie Overturns Multiple Times on R69 Near Vryheid

Fifteen people were taken to hospital, including two in a critical condition, after a bakkie overturned multiple times on the R69 outside Vryheid on Tuesday morning, 18 August 2026.

KwaZulu Private Ambulance spokesperson Craig Botha said the collision occurred at approximately 09:00, shortly after the vehicle left Vryheid while transporting passengers towards Louwsberg.

According to Botha, the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn several times. Emergency personnel were dispatched to the scene, where advanced life-support paramedics established a triage point to assess and treat the injured.

Two people sustained critical injuries, including severe head and abdominal trauma.

Five others were treated for serious injuries, predominantly fractures, while eight patients suffered minor cuts and contusions.

“All patients received emergency medical treatment on scene before being transported for further care,” stated Botha.

The South African Police Service also attended the scene to assist with traffic management and begin investigating the collision.

One lane was closed while emergency personnel treated the injured and worked to clear the roadway, resulting in minor traffic delays along the route.
