Communities across parts of KwaZulu-Natal have been warned of potentially damaging winds, as a cold front is expected to drive strong surface winds through the remainder of Monday, 29 June 2026.

The warning follows the South African Weather Service’s (SAWS) issuance of a Yellow Level 1 alert for Damaging Winds, indicating the possibility of localised impacts in affected areas.

According to SAWS, the passage of the cold front is expected to generate strong surface winds over the north-western parts of KwaZulu-Natal on Monday.

These conditions may result in localised damage to both formal and informal settlements, while agricultural activity could also be affected through possible disruptions and production losses.

In addition, falling trees may further compound the situation in affected towns, particularly where trees are located near roads, buildings, power lines or other infrastructure.

While SAWS has indicated that the winds are expected to subside overnight, their impact may still be felt across key transport routes during the day.

High-sided vehicles, in particular, could experience difficulty when travelling along exposed high-level roads and bridges, especially where crosswinds are present.

Fallen trees may also obstruct traffic flow, increasing the risk of delays, while power outages remain possible should trees or branches come into contact with electricity infrastructure.

The towns expected to be affected by the damaging winds include:

  • Vryheid
  • Ladysmith
  • Newcastle
  • Dannhauser
  • Utrecht
  • Dundee
  • Estcourt
  • Msinga
  • Nquthu
  • Sobabili
  • Indaka
  • Okhahlamba

With these conditions expected, SAWS has urged residents, motorists, farmers and businesses to take precautionary measures. Travellers are encouraged to monitor conditions along major routes before setting out, while property owners should secure loose items and vulnerable structures that may be affected by strong winds.

These measures, according to the weather service, can help reduce potential damage and improve public safety while the adverse weather conditions remain in effect.

As the cold front moves through the region, the main concern centres on the force of the damaging winds expected across northern KwaZulu-Natal, particularly in towns such as Newcastle, Vryheid, Dundee and Ladysmith.
