The Newcastle Municipality has secured top honours as the most functional fire and rescue service in KwaZulu-Natal at the Municipal Excellence Awards (MEA).

The achievement was celebrated on Thursday, 12 March 2026, during a ceremony hosted by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) at the Durban International Convention Centre.

By clinching this title, Newcastle has cemented its position among the premier top-performing municipalities within the province for this critical category. This provincial recognition follows a period of self-assessment and preparation.

As reported in Newcastillian News in October 2024, the Newcastle Municipality explained that it had implemented stringent measures to ensure its staff were fully trained for disasters, initiating proactive steps well in advance of the current award season.

At that time, the municipality detailed to Newcastillian News that all firefighting and disaster management personnel are trained to international standards, including Fire Fighter 1 and 2 and Hazmat Operations, accredited by the International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC). Furthermore, the municipality highlighted that its shift leaders and supervisors hold advanced qualifications in Fire Technology and Disaster Management.

Reflecting on the recent MEA recognition, the municipality’s Communications Unit stated:

“At the prestigious provincial ceremony, Newcastle Municipality was honoured with the award for Most Functional Municipal Fire and Rescue Services, recognising the municipality’s outstanding operational readiness, professionalism and unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property.”

In a dual victory for the region, the Newcastle Municipality also secured second place for the Outstanding Implementation of the Community Work Programme (CWP). This particular accolade highlights Newcastle’s efforts to facilitate community development and social upliftment by creating essential employment opportunities and strengthening local livelihoods.

This success stands in stark contrast to broader regional challenges.

As highlighted by Newcastillian News in May 2025, the Amajuba District Municipality has faced significant, well-documented struggles regarding its own disaster management capabilities. This includes a lack of dedicated fire engines and firefighting personnel—a situation that has placed immense pressure on the district’s ability to manage emergency incidents effectively.

Furthermore, the event saw broader recognition for municipalities across the Amajuba District, underscoring a collective drive by local governments to refine service delivery and expand socio-economic prospects.

Speaking on the sidelines of the event, Amajuba District Municipality Acting Mayor Mthembu emphasised the fundamental importance of municipal initiatives designed to tackle unemployment.

“Unemployment remains one of the biggest challenges facing our communities. As the Amajuba District Municipality, we remain committed to implementing programmes that create opportunities for our people. The recognition we received today through the EPWP award shows that while the challenge is great, we are making meaningful progress in improving the lives of our residents,” said Mthembu.

Delivering a message of support on behalf of the South African Local Government Association (SALGA), the organisation’s KwaZulu-Natal Chairperson and Mayor of Newcastle Municipality, Councillor Dube, underscored the vital role of collaboration.

He noted that such partnerships ensure government programmes translate into tangible benefits for local communities.

“Being here today is proof that when municipalities work together and remain committed to serving their communities, government can deliver meaningful change. These awards recognise the hard work of municipalities and encourage us to continue ensuring that services reach our people,” said Dube.

He also welcomed the accolades, describing the awards as a proud moment for both the municipality and the community it serves.

“These prestigious recognitions reaffirm that Newcastle Municipality continues to move forward in strengthening a capable, responsive, and people-centred local government. Being recognised for the functionality of our Fire and Rescue Services reflects the dedication, professionalism and bravery of the men and women who work tirelessly to ensure the safety of our communities.”

Additionally, the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Reverend Buthelezi, encouraged district leadership to continue prioritising Local Economic Development.

He described this as a key pillar in strengthening the local economy and addressing persistent unemployment across the region.

“The Community Work Programme remains an important vehicle for restoring dignity, creating opportunities and strengthening community resilience. This recognition demonstrates that our municipality is committed to building communities that are empowered, supported and actively involved in their own development.”

Mayor Dube extended his appreciation to municipal staff across various departments, acknowledging their pivotal role in securing these honours.

“On behalf of Council and the people of Newcastle, I extend heartfelt congratulations to our municipal management, the Fire and Rescue Services Unit, the Community Work Programme teams and every official whose dedication has contributed to this achievement. These awards are a testament to the hard work of our teams and the collective commitment to serving our communities with excellence.”

Newcastle’s recognition at the Municipal Excellence Awards also draws attention to differences in emergency service capacity across the wider Amajuba District.

While Newcastle has received provincial recognition for the functionality of its fire and rescue services, previous reporting has highlighted ongoing challenges at district level, where limitations in firefighting resources and personnel have raised concerns about disaster response capacity.

The award therefore provides a point of comparison within the district, highlighting where operational systems are functioning effectively and where additional investment and resources may still be required.
