SAWS has detailed that on Wednesday, 22 January 2025, KwaZulu-Natal can anticipate scattered showers and thunderstorms, with isolated incidents in the northern regions.

However, some storms are expected to intensify, particularly in the western areas. According to SAWS, these severe thunderstorms will likely be accompanied by torrential downpours, escalating the risk of flooding, alongside the potential for hail, excessive lightning, and robust winds.

The service has highlighted that these forecast weather conditions could lead to damage to critical infrastructure, vehicles, settlements, livelihoods, and livestock. There is also an increased risk of localised flooding on vulnerable roadways, as well as the possibility of injuries and threats to life due to lightning. Additionally, SAWS has cautioned about the potential for power surges resulting from excessive lightning.

With these predictions in mind, the following towns are on alert for severe thunderstorms on Wednesday:

  • Newcastle
  • Estcourt
  • Ladysmith
  • Dundee
  • Kokstad
  • Giants Castle
  • Mooi River
  • Dannhauser
  • Utrecht
  • Underberg
  • Ekuvukeni
  • Indaka
  • Howick

As these severe thunderstorms are anticipated to sweep through the aforementioned locales, communities are strongly advised to exercise caution and to stay informed with updates from credible weather services and media outlets.
