Women Attempt to Abduct Toddler from Grandmother’s Arms at Ladysmith Shopping Centre

A chilling episode recently transpired in Ladysmith, casting a shadow over public safety and compelling both law enforcement and Child Welfare to issue urgent warnings for parents to be exceptionally vigilant when venturing out with young children.

The Ladysmith SAPS has confirmed they were alerted to an incident where a three-year-old was nearly snatched from the arms of her grandmother during an ordinary shopping excursion at a popular centre in Ladysmith.

uThukela District SAPS Spokesperson, Warrant Officer Basheer Khan, painted a vivid picture of the scene that unfolded on the morning of Sunday, 12 January 2025. He explained that while inside a store at the shopping centre, an elderly woman and her granddaughter were approached by three impeccably dressed women, each with an athletic build that belied their sinister intent.

“One of the three women asked if she could carry the toddler, but prior to getting permission, she tried to take hold of her (the child). The child refused, tightening her grip onto her gran. The lady tried for a second time, this time using much more force which hurt the child, causing her to start crying. When she (the suspect) noticed she had failed to take a hold of the child, and that attention was being focused on them, all three quickly exited the store,” said Warrant Officer Khan, who added that information on hand suggested that all three women were foreign nationals.

With this incident still fresh, Warrant Officer Khan implored the community to elevate their vigilance to new heights, especially in public spaces like shopping centres where predators can exploit moments of distraction.

Moreover, Farieda Mia from Newcastle Child Welfare, though relieved the child was safe and that no similar incidents had been reported in Newcastle of late, underscored the gravity of the situation.

“It is important for community members to be vigilant with children in public, as incidents such as this can happen in an instant. It is better to be extremely cautious than to live with a lifetime of regret and trauma,” she highlighted.

This alarming event serves as a stark reminder of the lurking dangers that can descend in the most ordinary of circumstances, pressing upon us the need for relentless vigilance in safeguarding our children.
