A devastating tragedy struck Colenso on Friday, 3 January 2025, casting an overwhelming shadow over the community and leaving many in shock and deep mourning.

Discussing the matter, Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basheer Khan explained that on Friday morning, law enforcement attended to a crime scene; where police officials discovered the bodies of 86-year-old Petrus Erasmus and 79-year-old Cornelia Erasmus at their Montague Street residence, Colenso.
“They had both sustained multiple stab wounds. A few items were taken from the house,” said Warrant Officer Khan.
The brutal and senseless murder of this elderly couple has left the community in disbelief, with no clear motive emerging as of yet. While no arrests have yet been made, Warrant Officer Khan shared that the uThukela District Task Team are currently investigating two counts of murder and one count of house robbery, leaving the community clinging to the hope that the truth will soon come to light.
As the investigation continues and the perpetrators still at large, Warrant Officer Khan urged anyone with information that could assist in the investigation to come forward. “Anyone with information is urged to contact Captain Britts on 082 802 7777,” he said.

The grief and anguish felt by the family, friends, and neighbours of Petrus and Cornelia are immeasurable. The horrific nature of the crime has left an indelible scar on the community, and the hope for justice is all that remains as they search for answers in this dark and painful chapter.
