After a prolonged period of sweltering heat, Newcastillians can finally look forward to potential relief from the stifling heatwave that has engulfed the region. The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning for severe thunderstorms expected to sweep across various KwaZulu-Natal towns.
According to SAWS, dark, foreboding clouds are projected to blanket numerous towns in KZN starting Monday afternoon, 14 October 2024.
These thunderstorms are anticipated to provide a much-needed break from the heat; however, the impending storms also present significant risks that cannot be ignored.
The weather service forecasts that the thunderstorms will commence at 3 pm on Monday and continue into the evening, finally subsiding around midnight. While the storms may offer a welcome reprieve, SAWS warns that they could lead to considerable adverse effects on the communities in their path.
Residents are, therefore, advised to be aware of the potential for damage to infrastructure, vehicles, homes, and livelihoods. Furthermore, the threat of injuries and loss of life due to lightning strikes poses a serious concern, along with the risk of power surges caused by excessive lightning.
The towns anticipated to be affected by the severe thunderstorms include:
- Newcastle
- Ladysmith
- Utrecht
- Dundee
- Dannhauser
- Paulpietersburg
As these thunderstorms approach, Newcastillians are urged to exercise caution and stay informed about changing weather conditions.
