Car theft is yet again rearing its ugly head in Newcastle, following the theft of a Nissan bakkie from Amajuba Mall.

Newcastle Crime Fighter Task Team’s Imran Ghafoor explains that the vehicle was stolen from the popular shopping complex on Tuesday, 19 April 2022.

While the car owner’s shopping excursion came to a gut-wrenching end, the suspects did not manage to hold onto the stolen vehicle for very long.

According to Ghafoor, an informant noticed the vehicle in Osizweni and immediately notified law enforcement.

An operational team was put into place, with the vehicle recovered on Friday evening, 22 April 2022, in Osizweni, Section A.

However, Ghafoor notes, “No suspects were apprehended at the scene, and they are still at large. If anyone has any information on them, they are encouraged to contact the local police.”

Lizzy Arumugam of Newcastle Police Corporate Communications notes that this is the second stolen vehicle recently located in Osizweni.

She explains that on Monday, 18 April 2022, police responded to information regarding a stolen vehicle in Osizweni, Section F.

Upon arrival, a 34-year-old man was arrested after being found with a combi, suspected to be stolen. Upon further investigation, Arumugam said that the combi had been stolen from Diekloof, Soweto.
