Update on person who stole R3 million from Newcastle Municipality

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

Around two years ago, the Newcastle Municipality dealt with an employee who defrauded the entity out of millions, Dedre van Rooyen.

Van Rooyen made headlines when she appeared in the Durban Specialised Commercial Crime Court on 22 October 2020, after she allegedly defrauded the municipality’s payroll system of approximately R3.1 million.

According to reports, Van Rooyen began defrauding the payroll back in February 2012, with the last transaction in June 2020

It is speculated that she managed this by creating a ‘ghost employee’ in order to pay herself a second salary. However, she made the mistake of using the exact same banking details as the one listed for her salary.

Following her court case in October 2020, she was subsequently released on bail to the tune of R50 000.

While on bail, Van Rooyen had to surrender her passport to the investigating officer. She was also not allowed to visit any port of entry. Additionally, she is also not allowed to leave KZN without the consent of the investigating officer.

However, now, nearly two years later, what is happening with the case that captivated the attention of Newcastillians?

According to Natasha Kara, the KZN National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, the case will continue in the month of April, with van Rooyen once again appearing in the Durban Court. “The matter is back in court on 28 April, for reports and sentence.”

As the court case now finds itself on its final leg, the Newcastle Municipality’s head of Communications, Mlungisi Khumalo, explained that the municipality was unable to comment at the time, as the matter is still pending a court outcome.

Once the courts have concluded the matter, the Newcastillian – Online News will be sure to publish the verdict.
