The South African Police Service (SAPS) is tasked with defending its communities in the fight against crime. However, who is guarding the SAPS against the criminal element?

This follows allegations that two high-powered firearms were stolen from the Newcastle K9 Unit. Because the idea of firearms disappearing from SAPS-guarded premises is disturbing, the Newcastillian – Online News contacted local law enforcement to find out if the allegations were true.

Lizzy Arumugam, Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications Office, explains, “There is a case of Theft of Firearms that is being investigated by the District Detectives.”

According to Arumugam, the two weapons were stolen between 16 and 20 September 2021. Furthermore, Arumugam states, “One shotgun and one R5 Rifle, with ammunition, were stolen.”

While the SAPS has remained silent on how the firearms were stolen from the premises, it appears that nearly three months after the weapons were stolen, the SAPS is no closer to apprehending the perpetrators.

The investigation, according to Arumugam, is still ongoing.
