Just to recap, in December 2021, the Newcastillian – Online News reported on a rather disturbing case where a shotgun and an R5 rifle, along with ammunition, had been stolen from the local South African Police Service (SAPS) division.
At the time, the media liaison for Newcastle SAPS Corporate Communications Office, Lizzy Arumugam, explained that the weapons had been stolen sometime between 16 and 20 September 2021.
While remaining silent on how the weapons could have possibly been stolen from the premises, Arumugam assured that the Amajuba District Detectives were investigating the matter.

Being a significant problem requiring immediate attention, the Newcastillian – Online News approached the SAPS on Wednesday, 6 April 2022, for an update on the case.
However, KZN Police spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Ngobile Gwala said, “The matter is still under investigation.”
Additionally, Arumugam had similar feedback from a local level, “There is no positive information regarding the suspect yet.”
With regards to preventing further incidences, neither Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala nor Lizzy Arumugam could elaborate on how the Newcastle K9 Unit had improved its security to safeguard other firearms on the premises.
