Person shot in Newcastle following resurgence of taxi violence

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

Taxi violence is yet again surfacing in Newcastle following the brutal slaying of a local taxi association official.

The Amajuba District SAPS Commissioner, General Fred Alexander, gave us the rundown of what transpired.

According to the General, on Wednesday night, 6 April 2022, the victim was leaving his home in Madadeni shortly after 7 pm. He was then approached and gunned down—passing away at the scene. Alexander further stated that currently, no arrests had been made. But it is confirmed that the victim is the PRO of a local taxi association.

Continuing, General Alexander highlights that six taxi associations operate in the Amajuba District. “Currently, there are internal squabbles within the respective executives, and we need to resolve this to ensure the matter doesn’t escalate.”

General Alexander explains that the police are working closely with the Taxi Violence Task Unit, the Department of Transport and South African National Taxi Council (SANTACO) to address the matter.

Alexander hopes that taxi violence cases are resolved speedily through the various parties working together. This while ensuring that taxi violence does not bubble into the rest of Newcastle.

If you can recall, in January 2022, taxi violence erupted at Theku Plaza, Osizweni, when Madadeni drivers began shooting at Bambanani Taxi Association drivers. This resulted in five people sustaining gunshot wounds. Two of the five died on the scene, while the other three were rushed to Madadeni Hospital to be stabilised.

Eight suspects were later arrested in Newcastle for their role in the violence.
