The #FreeZuma protests have transformed into an anarchists playground as lawlessness and looting booms across the country, leaving several Newcastillians shutting their businesses doors out of fear.
During the early hours of Monday morning, 12 July 2021, protestors attempted to close off the HJ van Eck and Allen Street Intersection in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal. While the scene was cleared within minutes of the burning tyres, disruptive behaviour did not end there.
Pandemonium broke out at Theku Plaza, Osizweni NKZN, with hordes of residents looting the stores situated at the shopping complex. The area can only be described as post-apocalyptic, with a billowing cloud of smoke filling the sky and looters scurrying in a panic.
Shots have also allegedly been exchanged between law enforcement and lawbreakers. Motorists travelling along the Osizweni Road are urged to be cautious, as there is broken glass, rubbish and rocks on certain parts of the road.
Adding to the growing tensions, reports have surfaced of a group of protestors making their way to Newcastle. Amidst the ever-increasing fears, Newcastle SAPS spokesperson Lizzy Arumugam was contacted to offer insights to the Newcastillian community in Newcastle.
Arumugam states that while police are aware of the rumour, there is no confirmation that the said group is actually on its way. “We will let the media know once we have received confirmation,” she points out.
With fearmongering running rife, Pioneer Park Pick n Pay has also been targeted by rumours. Currently, it is being claimed that the store is being looted. However, Allen Kramm of the store claims this is entirely false. “We have however closed our store for safety reasons,” he enthuses.
Newcastillians are encouraged to be careful during this challenging time and verify information shared over social media. There is no need to add fear in these trying times.
