An Estcourt resident finds himself in hot water after being caught with a 9mm pistol and ammunition while travelling in a taxi.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mmako Mophiring explains that on Monday, 28 February 2022, the Rapid Rail Police Unit deployed at Harrismith was conducting a stop and search on the N3 at Emoyeni.

“Apparently, they stopped a minibus taxi with GP registration on the northbound headed to Gauteng Province. Whilst they were busy searching the passengers, they came across a passenger from Estcourt who was in possession of a firearm.”

The man carried a Norinco 9mm pistol and one magazine with five bullets. Mophiring points out, “He failed to produce a licence to possess the firearm and was arrested and the firearm seized as an exhibit and for further forensic ballistic analysis.”

He was then subsequently charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The 36-year-old man officially made his first appearance in the Harrismith Magistrate Court on Monday, 1 March 2022, and was issued bail of R1000.

He is expected to appear again in the same court on 8 April 2022.

With the Estcourt resident now out on bail, what are your thoughts on the matter?
