Taxi conflict erupts outside Newcastle Police Station

Taxi conflict sees a portion of Allen Street, Newcastle closed

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

Newcastle SAPS were forced to close a portion of Allen Street on 17 September 2021, following conflict between taxi operators outside the Newcastle Police Station.

A police official on the scene explained that a taxi driver was shot earlier this morning at the taxi rank. After the incident and the driver being transported to the hospital, a large group of taxi drivers made their way to the police station.

At the station, one taxi was vandalised, and the driver was assaulted. Police and security officials jumped into action, cornering the road off.

Paramedics were called to the scene to attend to the assaulted man. However, the crowds initially made it difficult for them to get to him.

Police managed to control the crowd of taxi operators.

During the operation, one tear grenade canister was dropped, bringing about a sense of calm. Heavily armed police officials are maintaining order, stopping traffic from driving past to minimise possible civilians injuries.

Further investigations are underway, with the police keeping a watchful eye on the situation.
