Estimated reading time: 3 minutes

Newcastle Mayor Cllr Xolani Dube has committed to conducting a series of oversight visits in the coming days at various projects across Newcastle.

The initiative forms part of Mayor Dube’s commitment to improving and leveraging sustainable water and sanitation solutions for Newcastle residents.

Looking into which projects are underway:

The Mayor kicked off his Mayoral Project Oversight Visits on Monday, 14 March 2022, with the Blaauwbosch Bulk Water project in Ward 18. He was joined by the Deputy Mayor, Cllr Musa Thwala, Speaker of Council, Cllr Thengi Zulu, Technical Services Acting SED, Sazi Shange, and Ward Councillors.

The tour’s purpose was to review the progress of the Blaauwbosch Bulk Water project since its inception to respond constructively to the challenges that may hinder its completion.

The Mayor briefly highlighted that the Blaauwbosch Bulk Water Supply project was conceptualised to address existing water supply difficulties in Wards 6; 12; 15; 16; and 18 by enhancing and sustaining supply capacity.

“This project is a strategic investment that has been injected to fix Blaauwbosch’s water supply challenges. This oversight visit is merely to affirm our commitment and strong desire to create sustainable development for residents of Newcastle,”

The second stop of the day was to assess the progression of the VIP toilets refurbishment project in ward 18. The refurbishment project seeks to provide adequate sanitation for people.

Newcastle Municipality’s leadership unveiled the freshly restored facilities, noting that most of the toilets have been completed and are now available for use.

The Newcastle Mayor affirmed that he and his delegation would continue to visit various projects in all 34 wards of Newcastle throughout the week.

These are the projects in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal.

  • Link Road upgrade
  • Newcastle West Meter Replacement and Installation
  • Newcastle Bulk Meter Replacement and Installation
  • Madadeni Water Treatment Plant
  • Straffordhill DN150 Sewer Pipe Replacement
  • MF18 and MF19 Road Upgrade

While the initiative was meant to continue on Tuesday, 15 March 2022, the Municipality postponed the Mayor’s oversight visits for the day. According to reports, Cllr Dube and his delegation will continue on Wednesday, 16 March 2022.

While the Municipality did not elaborate on why the project was postponed, the decision was made following an attempt on the Deputy Mayor’s life on Monday night, 14 March 2022.
