As frosty mornings continue to grip parts of South Africa, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a mid-week outlook showing that winter has firmly settled over KwaZulu-Natal.
For Newcastle, Utrecht, Dundee, Ladysmith and surrounding northern inland areas, the remainder of the week is expected to bring crisp, mostly dry conditions, with fine and cool daytime weather giving way to much colder nights.

According to SAWS, conditions on Wednesday, 8 July 2026, will remain settled across these inland towns, with clear skies and cool daytime temperatures dominating the forecast.

However, temperatures are expected to drop sharply after sunset, bringing a noticeable winter bite into the evening and early morning hours.
While inland areas are set for dry and settled weather, coastal regions such as Richards Bay, Durban and Port Shepstone are experiencing cooler, overcast conditions.
This coastal cloud cover is expected to become more pronounced from Thursday, 9 July 2026, as a cloud boundary develops along the east coast.

As a result, northern inland areas are forecast to remain dry and cool, with some intermittent cloud cover. SAWS indicated that rainfall is highly unlikely in these inland zones.
Coastal areas, however, can expect thicker cloud cover and a slight chance of isolated light showers.
Looking ahead to Friday, 10 July 2026, SAWS expects the current weather pattern to remain largely unchanged.
Most of KZN will continue to experience cool daytime conditions, while Newcastle, Dundee, Ladysmith and Utrecht are expected to feel a sharper drop in temperatures after sunset.

Along the coast, partly cloudy conditions are expected to persist, with a low chance of isolated showers.
Daytime maximum temperatures in coastal areas are expected to remain around 20°C, although the cooler breeze may leave conditions feeling colder than the numbers suggest.

Overall, the province is set for a stable winter spell, with no severe storms or heavy rainfall expected.
However, residents in the northern interior should prepare for cold mornings and evenings, while those along the coast may want to keep a light jacket nearby due to the cloud cover and possible light showers.

For inland communities, the clear daytime skies will provide good conditions for outdoor tasks, provided residents are prepared for the sudden temperature drop after sunset.
Coastal areas, meanwhile, can expect mild but overcast conditions as the week draws to a close. while coastal areas can expect mild, albeit overcast, conditions to conclude the week.
