With Eskom pushing South Africans deeper into their wallets, concerns over streetlights burning bright throughout Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal came to light.
Additionally, numerous residents pointed out that many streetlights do not work correctly. This results in pitch-black streets, creating a safety hazard.
In response, Cllr Musa Thwala, Newcastle Deputy Mayor and Technical Services Portfolio Chairperson, chatted to us. The Deputy Mayor assured Newcastillians that the municipality is working around the clock to repair all faulty streetlights.
He has also confirmed that his portfolio will look into the frequent power outages in some parts of Newcastle.
On Tuesday night, 8 February 2022, the Deputy Mayor, Speaker Cllr Thengamehlo Zulu, Cllr Faizel Cassim and municipal officials conducted an oversight visit of streets affected by broken streetlights. The visit also formed part of inspecting the replacement of various new substations.
The Deputy Mayor has committed to inspecting all streetlights at least once a week until a permanent solution is found.
Cllr Thwala and the Speaker took advantage of the opportunity to meet with affected residents and assured them that the current administration had devised a master plan to put an end to broken streetlights.
“As the newly elected administration we will not rest until our infrastructure gets the attention that it deserves. We are currently in the process of finalising our strategic master plan, which will guide us towards ensuring that the people of Newcastle receive basic services without any form of hindrance. I’ve personally committed to conduct these oversight visits every week, so that we reassure our residents that we understand their concerns,” remarked Cllr Musa Thwala.
Moreover, Cllr Musa Thwala is expected to expand the oversight visits to include road and water infrastructure assessments.
A full report, along with immediate solutions, will be shared with residents of Newcastle once it has been made available.
