Newcastle Deputy Mayor survives assassination attempt

Newcastle Municipality’s Deputy Mayor Cllr Musa Thwala was shot at, outside his home in Madadeni on Monday night, 14 March 2022. This follows a failed assassination attempt on his life.

Municipal Speaker Cllr Thengi Zulu explains that while information around the incident is still unclear, it was established that Cllr Thwala and two of his bodyguards were attacked outside the Deputy Mayor’s home between 7 pm and 9 pm.

Cllr Zulu highlights that Cllr Thwala is currently in good health. One of his bodyguards was shot, yet is in a stable condition. Sadly, the second succumbed to his injuries.

One suspect is currently in police custody after being arrested shortly after the incident.
