Falsely accused

The shame of South Africa being our ridiculously high Rape rate has impacted numerous lives over the years. In fact, according to the most recent crime statistics published by the SAPS in November 2021, 9 556 people were raped between July and September 2021.

However, a woman recently insulted those who have endured the unthinkable by falsely accusing two brothers of raping her.

Lizzy Arumugam, the spokesperson for the Newcastle SAPS, explains that the woman is now facing criminal charges. Arumugam further states that the woman in question claimed that on 11 February 2022, at 9 pm, she was asleep at her home in Section B, Osizweni, when she heard someone opening the door.

“She alleged that a known suspect carrying a knife entered and accused her of not paying rent.” The woman went on to say that the man and his brother then proceeded to rape her.

Rape charges were filed at the Osizweni SAPS station, and the case was transferred to the Newcastle Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit for further investigation.

The two brothers, aged 34 and 36, were then apprehended. But, after investigation, the truth surrounding the Rape came to light.

Arumugam says, “Following an intensive investigation that the investigating officer conducted, it was established that the complainant lied under oath.” This resulted in the two brothers being released. But the story did not end there.

KZN Police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala, explains that a perjury case was opened for investigation at Osizweni SAPS.

On Monday, 14 February 2022, she appeared in the Madadeni Magistrates Court and was remanded in custody until her next court appearance.

“We once again appeal to our citizens to refrain from reporting false cases as valuable police resources are wasted chasing untrue allegations thus depriving genuine victims of crimes from realising justice,” Lieutenant Colonel Gwala concludes.

This case comes as a reminder to us all. Rape destroys lives in all respects, even if you are falsely accused and proven innocent thereafter. It is a soulless act and should never be used as a tool in any regard.
