Four men have been arrested on charges of business robbery, attempted murder, and explosives possession.

According to Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala, at 11 pm on Sunday, 9 January 2022, police responded to a report of a burglary in progress at a shopping centre on St Johns Avenue in Pinetown.

“Upon arrival at the scene, police spotted a group of men attempting to flee the premises and they opened fire at police.” Four of the suspects were later apprehended with cellphones, drills, gloves, a crowbar, and explosives on them.

While the police were on the scene, Gwala noted a white vehicle driving in the area.

“When police officers approached the vehicle, the suspects sped off. Police gave chase and the suspects abandoned the vehicle on Wilson Drive in Caversham Glen. Upon searching the vehicle, police found various pieces of police uniform, a bulletproof vest, and a firearm with sixteen rounds of ammunition.”

A security guard at the shopping centre later arrived and informed police that he was on duty when the same vehicle driven by five occupants in police uniforms arrived at the centre.

According to the report, “the security guard was forced into the vehicle, and the panic button was taken away from him. He was dropped off in the bushes in New Germany.”

Investigations are currently underway as there appears to be more to the story than meets the eye. The fact that this is yet another case where explosives have been found is beginning to paint a concerning picture.
