35 parcels of heroin seized in Kirkland Street, Newcastle

Kirkland Street, Newcastle, drug bust (2)

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

Kirkland Street was action-packed on Friday afternoon, 11 February 2022. This, after two drug dealers peddling their illicit products, were apprehended by law enforcement.

The men were apprehended with 35 parcels of heroin.

The Newcastle Crime Fighter Task Team’s Imran Ghafoor explains what happened. The arrest occurred between the Mosque Parking and Kirkland Street parking bays. This was after law enforcement received a tip about drug dealing in the area.

With the two perpetrators now in police custody, Ghafoor stresses that heroin usage is an issue in Newcastle, especially in the CBD.

“It is big syndicates in the area who are involved in drug dealing, with the users smoking it in public. This is why we are trying to get them off the streets.”

Despite recent success, and because syndicates try to remain hidden, Ghafoor explains that law enforcement faces several challenges in combating drugs. However, he believes that this will change if the community notifies the SAPS of any drug-related activity they witness in the suburbs and CBD.

Ghafoor says that the community can play an essential role in the drug war by stepping forward and getting involved.

As the two drug dealers prepare to appear in court, a special thanks go out to the following operations teams:

  • Newcastle K9 unit
  • Newcastle Crime Prevention
  • District Task Team
  • Newcastle Crime Fighter Task Team
  • Anti Hijacking unit
