Newcastle Municipality’s new leadership took office in November 2021. However, shortly after taking office, the team was accused of wasteful/unnecessary spending in December 2021.

This came after billboards were erected in the town to introduce the new leadership

Various Newcastillians expressed their concerns about the billboards and the associated costs, particularly given the municipality’s current financial situation.

Therefore, the Newcastillian – Online News approached the Newcastle Municipality looking for answers.

Mlungisi Khumalo, the Municipality’s Head of Communications, explains that Newcastillians should not be concerned about the cost of the billboards.

“According to a preliminary report which was presented at Council regarding this matter, it was established that there were no cost implications of funds which were paid by the Municipality.”

He does, however, state that this is preliminary and not conclusive. With this in mind, Khumalo assures that a detailed report on the matter will be shared in due course.

“Furthermore, the community can rest assured that the municipality did not use any public funds on this initiative,” Khumalo concludes.

  1. Lol. The article does not clarify as to how and who funded the billboards. Until there is transparency as to where the money came from, we as concerned residents will still question the source.
