Looking back, Dale Schnuir, a beloved Newcastle resident, was diagnosed with cancer in October 2021, leaving him with tumours in both his brain and stomach.
To make matters worse, the adoring husband and father of two has no medical aid, and the pandemic has placed additional financial strain on his family. This all resulted in a community member contacting the Newcastillian – Online News, requesting that we use our loud voice and ask the community to come to his aid.

After the article was published, in proper Newcastillian form, the Newcastle community stepped up to the plate, showering the Schnuirs with love and support. (Bravo, we are so proud of you all).
The dedicated Samantha Shaw, a family friend, went so far as to start a backabuddy campaign to help Dale and his family during this difficult time. She also organised a raffle in which a sheep was up for grabs.
Additionally, the Newcastle Sakekamer also came to the party, hosting its annual golf day, where a substantial portion of the proceeds was allocated to Dale.
When discussing the fundraising initiatives, Samantha stressed the importance of having funds available to assist Dale. If he needs treatment or medication, the funds will ensure that he does not have to wait in line and be seen within three to six weeks.

When it comes to community-driven initiatives, Samantha says the response has been overwhelming.
“We managed to sell 934 tickets for the raffle, making over R18 000 for Dale. The backabuddy campaign is also doing great,” she announces. Samantha confirms that additional financial contributions were made, seeing just over R25 000 raised to aid Dale in his time of need. Jointly, the Newcastle Sakekamer will be donating R10 000 from their golf day to Dale and his family.
While financial contributions are pouring in to help Dale, how is he faring in these trying times?
According to Samantha, Dale has completed his first round of radiation for the cancerous tumours in his head.
Presently, Dale is still in hospital, and Samantha explains that he is expected to undergo further treatment for the stomach cancer after two weeks.
With this in mind, Newcastillians are encouraged to keep Dale in their thoughts as he continues to undergo medical treatment.
Be sure to extend your messages of support in the comment section below, and once again, well done, our Newcastillian community, together we have the power to change lives.
