Cllr Reginald Ndima, the Amajuba District Municipality’s Speaker, was assassinated in the early hours of Saturday, 29 January 2022, at his Ncandu Park home.
Cllr Ndima was shot by unknown assailants while closing the gate after parking his car in the garage, according to police sources.
The gunshots reportedly woke up his wife and children, who allegedly dashed outside. They discovered Cllr Ndima lying in the driveway and rushed him to the hospital.
Unfortunately, Cllr Ndima was declared dead on arrival. No suspects have been apprehended as of yet, and police investigations are ongoing.
While the details surrounding the tragic murder are currently sketchy, the Amajuba District Mayor, Cllr Vuselwa Bam, and the entire Amajuba District Municipality leadership are in consultation with the family to gather all necessary details.
Cllr Ndima was appointed Speaker of the district municipality on 30 November 2021, following the 2021 Local Government Elections.
According to the Amajuba District Municipality, the 58-year-old Cllr Ndima was one of the longest-serving Councillors and will be remembered for his unending efforts and selflessness in improving the lives of the people of Amajuba District.
“He stunned us with his courage, persistence and perseverance. Despite his age he remained energetic and a source of knowledge especially to young and new Councillors he served with.”
Cllr Bam adds, “My deepest sympathies go out to the family of the deceased, people of Amajuba District, the Amajuba District Municipality and all those who were close to Cllr Ndima. May God give you the comfort and peace that you seek and may the soul of your loved one rest in peace.”
Cllr Alex Liu, of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) explains that Cllr Nduma’s death comes as a shock. “It is both terrible and sad news, because Cllr Ndima was a selfless person who cared deeply about the well-being of others and the community. It’s beyond me why anyone would want to harm him.”
However, Cllr Liu stresses that the IFP will not bow down to violence, emphasising that the political party is calling on law enforcement to bring the perpetrators to book as soon as possible.
MEC for the KZN Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (CoGTA) Sipho Hllomuka adds, “This senseless murder has robbed the people of Amajuba of a dedicated servant who was passionate about improving the lives of residents.”
He also expresses CoGTA’s heartfelt condolences to Cllr Ndima’s family while urging the communities to remain calm. “We urge law enforcement agencies to leave no stone unturned in the quest to apprehend those that are responsible and bring an end to these attacks on public representatives in our province. We cannot allow those that are hell-bent on plunging the sphere of local government in our province into chaos to succeed.”
Cllr Ndima’s family and colleagues have also received condolences from the Democratic Alliance (DA).
However, the DA KZN leader Francois Rodgers says, “We would also like to reiterate our call to the Provincial leadership to prioritise the recommendations of the Moerane commission to prevent further bloodshed. The job of councillors is to serve communities, it is now up to the Premier, Sihle Zikalala and CoGTA MEC, Sipho Hlomuka to ensure that they are able to do their duty without being in constant fear.”
The Newcastillian – Online News and Pixelfish Marketing team extend our heartfelt condolences to Cllr Ndima’s family during this difficult time.
