The Amajuba District Municipality noted a significant change in its leadership following the entity’s inaugural ceremony on Tuesday, 30 November 2021.
Political groups congregated at the Newcastle Show Grounds, with supporters and media in attendance. Starting the election process, political parties voted for the Speaker.
Reginald Ndima of the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and Greaterman Thawla of the African National Congress (ANC) were up for the position. However, Cllr Ndima won with 21 votes against Cllr Thwala’s eight.
The Mayor of the Amajuba District Municipality was next in line. Cllr Vuselwa Bam of the IFP was elected without opposition. Furthermore, Cllr Sibusiso Sizani of the Economic Freedom Fighters will serve as Deputy Mayor of the Amajuba District Municipality.

While his nomination was not contested, the Democratic Alliance (DA) requested it to be noted that they were not in support of the decision. Cllr Andile Nkosi of Team Sugar South Africa has won the role of Chief Whip for the district.
Newly elected Mayor Bam closed the celebration by emphasising how humbled she is to have been selected for the position. Looking ahead, she assures the community that she will work hard to ensure that the Amajuba District Municipality provides the best possible service to its inhabitants.
