Keeping you up to date with current SAPS reports, we take a look at the past week’s activities across Newcastle, Madadeni and Osiziweni.
Newcastle:
Newcastle Detectives are currently looking into a common robbery on Allen Street, 5 January 2022.
According to Lizzy Arumugam, spokesperson for the Newcastle SAPS, the victim parked his vehicle on the busy road. When he returned to his car, he was confronted by an unspecified number of suspects.
One of the suspects hit him on the chest, then took the man’s cell phone out of his pocket. Following the altercation, the suspects then fled the scene.
While this type of robbery makes one wonder about safety in the CBD, motor vehicles are also being targeted.
Newcastle Detectives are looking into two cases of theft from a motor vehicle. Both incidents occurred on 4 January 2022. The first on Scott Street.
“The complainant alleged that he parked the truck on Scott Street. When he returned the passenger door locking mechanism wasn’t working and a bag containing R1500 cash was stolen.”
The second incident occurred at the Newcastle Mall.
Arumugam describes the incident by saying that the motorist had parked his truck in the parking lot. When he returned to the vehicle, the passenger door had been unlocked, and R20,000 had been stolen from the truck’s safe.
In addition to theft from motor vehicles, the SAPS has arrested two men in Newcastle for possessing unlicensed firearms. According to Arumugam, the arrests occurred on 5 January 2022.
One of the men was discovered with a firearm at Taxi City Spar, and the other was found with an illegal firearm on Allen Street.
Madadeni:
The Madadeni Police Department reported several robberies in their communities. Arumugam points out that two of the thefts took place on 1 January 2022, while the third on 4 January 2022.
The first robbery occurred at 2.30 am in Section 3. Arumugam notes that the victim claims he was going to a petrol station when three men attacked him. One of the men possessed a firearm.
After robbing the man of his cellphone, one of the suspects stabbed him in the left shoulder and back.
The second incident occurred at 5 pm near Shoprite. “It is alleged that two unknown men grabbed the victim’s handbag, containing a cell phone, cash and bank cards, all to the value of R5 874 while she was walking,” declares Arumugam.
The third robbery took place on a public road in Section 5 at 2 pm on 4 January 2022. The victim claims four men threatened him and stole his mobile phone and earphones. Fortunately, the suspects were apprehended shortly after
Osizweni:
Osizweni Detectives are looking into an Attempted Murder case on 26 December 2021. It is reported that the crime unfolded on a public road near Mzimkhulu Tavern.
According to Arumugam, the victim was allegedly attacked by a group of people. During the altercation, the victim was able to draw and shoot his firearm. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the struggle, the gunshot instead struck the victim in his stomach.
Osizweni, like Madadeni, is looking into multiple robberies. One of the robberies in question occurred around 3 am on 1 January 2022. “The complainant claimed that while on his way home, a group of people approached him, attacked him, and stabbed him in the back.”
While the man was able to flee to the safety of his home, his cell phone and cap were stolen.
In addition, Osizweni Detectives are looking into a case of common robbery from 3 January 2021 in Blaauwbosch.
At 7.30 pm, the complainant was allegedly walking home when three men approached her. They sneaked up behind her, pushed her down, and stole her laptop and router.
The third incident under investigation by Osizweni Detectives occurred on 4 January at Maseko Stand in Blaaubosch. According to Arumugam, the complainant claims that five men entered the shop before striking him with a blunt object. The men then extracted R1500 from the victim’s pockets.
Moreover, Osizweni Detectives are investigating a case of theft from a motor vehicle in Section D. This, following the theft of the victim’s car battery.
