#ProtectSouthAfrica: Newcastle Volunteers needed, and businesses urged to close tomorrow

Newcastle Volunteers needed, and businesses urged to close tomorrow

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

The time has come for the community to continue its struggle against the growing unrest in the country, threatening to bubble over into Newcastle.

Today, Sunday, 18 July 2021, Imran Ghafoor of the Newcastle Crime Fighter task team confirmed a meeting had taken place with law enforcement and relevant role-players who took an active stance to protect Newcastle over the past week. Ghafoor states, “As we know in the past week we did a fantastic job and the credit goes to all the units involved.”

However, he adds that during the meeting, there was a call to businesses planning to reopen on Monday, 19 July 2021, not to do so. “We had a long discussion with business owners, industrial and all law enforcement. As Newcastle, we came to the conclusion we not going to open tomorrow because of our safety and security.”

This stems from concerns about the corruption trial of former president Jacob Zuma, set to continue on Monday, 19 July 2021. It is feared the case might reignite tensions and potentially see protests continue.

Ghafoor says essential businesses will be open, and no one can be forced to close their businesses, but as precautionary steps need to be taken, Newcastillians are encouraged to unite to protect our community and town from the threat. “From 12am-12pm we need to tighten up our security and we request that all voluntarily members to come onboard, as we know the numbers are decreasing. But at this time, we need everyone to stand by the law enforcement in order to safeguard our town and our people.”
