As we enter the month of July, one can only look at the past six months with a sense of amazement. The year 2020 has truly been a rollercoaster, with ups and downs at every corner. It seems that each day holds something new that leaves people somewhat flabbergasted.
The COVID-19 pandemic bringing the global economy almost to a grinding holt, the Black Lives Movement gaining momentum around the world, Gender-Based Violence in South Africa reaching devasting proportions are just the tip of the iceberg.
Looking at everything that is happening, the Newcastillian asked members of the community what their thoughts were on what is happening in the world. This is what they have to say:
Karry Pandohi:
“I would say that COVID-19 is one of the biggest pandemics that the world is facing. Everyone is so scared at the moment because of it. But I think one of the issues we need to be focusing on is Gender-Based Violence. The number of women being killed in our country is concerning and is getting out of proportion now. Something needs to be done.”
Manqoba Madonsela:
“In regard to the Black Lives Movement, I think it has been coming for some time. The killing of black people by police officers in other countries has been happening for a while, but with social media, people are becoming more and more aware of it. Fighting racism is important; because you should never be fear for your life, simply because of your race.”
However, at a local front, Manqoba feels that corruption has also come to the forefront in recent months.
“The people running the country are only interested in their personal interests. They are neglecting the people, all races. The system is filled with corruption and something needs to be done to resolve the matter.”
Julian Wilkinson:
Looking at the current happenings in the world, Julian says people will have to start preparing for anything.
“Looking at the world from a religious point of view, it is almost like the world is coming at an end. A person doesn’t even know what is right and wrong anymore. We just need to be prepared for anything now.”
Keith Solomon:
“I believe corruption and dictatorship are two of the biggest issues happening in the world. Those in power are playing us like puppets. With the COVID-19 pandemic, you can’t compare the death rate to other diseases such as influenza and cancer. So why did they have to stop the economy like this? They don’t stop the economy for other health related issues so why for COVID-19? The poor are now becoming poorer.”
