The Association for the Physically Disabled, Nil Desperandum, stands as a beacon of hope for Newcastle’s disabled community.
For its residents, Nil Desperandum is more than a facility. It is a home, a place where friends become family. A place where their well-being is of the utmost importance.
With the organisation relying heavily on the generosity of the community, its residents refuse to allow life to pass them by.
Recently, Nil Desperandum has opened a little store to generate a small income to support the facility.
“The residents have a workshop where they make things during the morning,” explains Chantal Erasmus of Nil Desperandum. Their creative crafts placed in the store.
“It allows the residents to showcase their respective talents to visitors; while earning an income which goes towards the occupational therapy equipment,” Chantal adds.
Allowing the residents to interact with visitors, showing off their creative abilities, the store is rapidly growing.
“We have also started selling books at R10 each. We initially started selling the books, as we had a lot laying around and, in the process, more books were donated to us.”
Now a thriving little store, the residents are beaming with pride. Their hard work has developed from an idea to something which now generates a small income to assist in raising funds for the daily running costs of Nil Desperandum.
Open to the public from Monday to Friday, Newcastillians can visit the facility and contribute to the cause, supporting both the facility and the residents.
