The Association for the Physically Challenged, Nil Desperandum, is more than a mere centre for Newcastle’s physically handicapped.

It is a home, a place of friendship and a glimmer of hope for those who face daily challenges in their lives. Working behind the scenes, ensuring the residents of Nil Desperandum lead a life of comfort, filled with love, is Chantal Erasmus.

As of the beginning of August, Chantal has taken the reins of Nil Desperandum as its administrator. A position which will see her working diligently to ensure the home runs at an optimal level.

How did Chantal come to be the home’s newest administrator?

“I worked for Kantech for five years and at the stage, it was a half-day position, which was ideal as it allowed me to attend my children events after school. However, when I saw the advert for the vacancy, I knew this is what I wanted to do.”

Applying for the post, Chantal explains that she prayed relentlessly for the position. “Me getting the job really saw my prayers being answered,” she says.

But what makes working at an organisation such as Nil Desperandum so special?

“I believe God calls people to do what needs to be done and the moment I walked in here, I knew this was meant for me.”

Chantal elaborates that people often tend to forget about the residents of Nil Desperandum. “They are the forgotten children. Some of the residents don’t have any family, there are those whose families don’t visit on a regular basis and I want to see the community becoming more involved. I want to make this a home for the residents and see them socialising with the community.”

Furthermore, she explains that there is still a certain stigma linked to people with physical disabilities. A stigma which sees some viewing the physically handicapped as mentally challenged.

“The people who live here are not stupid or dumb. There is also no reason for people to be scared of them.”

With a vision to break the stigma surrounding the physically handicapped and seeing the community becoming more involved in the home, Chantal has high hopes for Nil Desperandum.

As she prepares to bring about a new era to the Association for the Physically Challenged, Nil Desperandum, be sure to show your support to the home and its residents.

Congratulations to Chantal Erasmus.

  1. Goeiedag Chantal

    Lida
