Winter appears to be loosening its grip across northern KwaZulu-Natal, with warmer daytime temperatures beginning to offer a taste of the spring weather waiting just around the corner.
As the weekend arrives, Newcastle, Ladysmith and Vryheid can expect particularly warm conditions on Friday and Saturday before temperatures ease noticeably on Sunday.

According to AccuWeather’s latest forecast, rainfall is unlikely across the three communities throughout the weekend, with predominantly dry conditions expected.
Against this backdrop, we take a closer look at what residents can expect over the next three days:
Friday, 21 August 2026:
Newcastle: A warm day is forecast, with temperatures expected to peak at 29°C before dropping to 12°C overnight.
Ladysmith: Warm conditions are expected, with temperatures forecast to reach 29°C. The temperature is expected to fall to 9°C during the night.
Vryheid: A pleasant and warm day is forecast, with temperatures expected to reach 28°C before dropping to 12°C overnight.
Saturday, 22 August 2026:
Newcastle: The warmer weather continues, with temperatures forecast to reach 30°C before falling to 10°C during the night.
Ladysmith: Saturday will be the hottest day of the weekend, with temperatures forecast to reach 31°C. A much cooler evening will follow, with temperatures dropping to 7°C.
Vryheid: A warm day is forecast, with temperatures expected to peak at 30°C before dropping to 10°C overnight.
Sunday, 23 August 2026:
Newcastle: Temperatures will ease slightly, with a daytime high of 25°C forecast. The temperature is expected to drop to 8°C overnight.
Ladysmith: A noticeably cooler day is expected, with temperatures forecast to reach 22°C before falling to a chilly 5°C during the night.
Vryheid: Cooler conditions are also expected, with temperatures forecast to peak at 23°C before dropping to 8°C overnight.
While Sunday will bring a noticeable drop in temperatures, particularly after sunset, the weekend forecast provides a welcome taste of warmer weather as the region moves towards spring.
With little to no rainfall currently forecast for Newcastle, Ladysmith or Vryheid, residents planning outdoor activities or weekend travel should have generally favourable conditions.
