Toyota Urban Cruiser owners are being urged to check whether their vehicles are affected by a nationwide recall involving faulty fuel level readings.
The National Consumer Commission (NCC) confirmed that Toyota South Africa Motors (Pty) Ltd initiated the recall after identifying a defect that may cause the fuel gauge to show more fuel than is actually left in the tank.

The affected vehicles were sold through Toyota South Africa’s dealership network between 17 January and 3 June 2025.
According to the NCC, the recall covers 2 208 vehicles. Of these, 2 015 were sold in South Africa, while 193 were exported to neighbouring countries. This includes 14 vehicles sent to Eswatini, 23 to Botswana, five to Lesotho and 151 to Namibia.
Explaining the defect, the NCC said an incorrect correction value may have been stored in the vehicle’s combination meter during manufacturing.
“During the manufacturing process of the combination meter, there is a possibility that the improper correction value of the fuel indicator has been written in the memory of the combination meter. As a result, the fuel level indicator in the combination meter may indicate more fuel than actually remaining,” said the NCC.
The defect means motorists may believe they have more fuel available than is actually in the tank. The low-fuel warning light may also fail to activate as the fuel level drops.
Consequently, a driver could unknowingly run out of fuel, causing the engine to stall and preventing the vehicle from restarting. This could leave motorists stranded, including while travelling on busy roads or between towns.
Owners of affected Urban Cruisers have been instructed to take their vehicles to the nearest authorised Toyota dealership for inspection.
“Consumers who own the affected vehicles are urged to take their vehicles to their nearest authorised Toyota dealership for a fuel gauge inspection. Any corrective work will be performed at no cost,” said the NCC.
Toyota Urban Cruiser owners who are uncertain whether their vehicle is included in the recall should contact an authorised Toyota dealership for assistance.
