A Newcastle mother has been left devastated after a municipal skip fell onto her five-year-old daughter on Friday, 15 May 2026, killing the child and leaving residents at the Suryaville Flats on Jasmine Crescent in shock.
The incident has cast a sombre mood over the flats, where residents are now questioning how such a tragedy could have occurred in an area where children regularly play and where heavy municipal refuse equipment forms part of the residential environment.

Speaking to Newcastillian News, a visibly distraught Lisa Mohan recalled the final moments before her daughter, Kiara, was fatally injured.
According to Mohan, Kiara had been playing outside with other children shortly before the incident unfolded.
“Kiara was playing outside with other children. I went outside to call her inside and she said she was on her way. I then began making my way upstairs to our flat, so I could return to my seven-month-old baby. I got inside, and looked out the window to see where Kiara was, because she did not come inside. I looked outside, I saw that the municipal skip had fallen over, and that there was a child underneath, and as a mother, I immediately ran outside to see how I could help,” Mohan explained.
What she found moments later would change her life permanently. Rushing back downstairs, Mohan said she was confronted with the devastating realisation that it was her own daughter trapped beneath the heavy skip.
“It had fallen on her, and when I got to the skip, it was lying on her and I could see she was bleeding from the nose,” she said.
Driven by panic and instinct, Mohan began screaming for help and attempted to lift the skip herself. However, the weight proved too much.
“I tried to lift it, but I couldn’t. My brother helped me, and another resident from the flats then lifted Kiara up and removed her from where she was lying,” Mohan explained.
A nearby resident who assisted in freeing Kiara said the incident happened within moments.
“I was sitting there and saw the children walk past me, before I heard the bin suddenly fall. When I got up to look what was happening, I saw the child was under the skip and immediately went to help,” he said.
Although Kiara was removed from beneath the skip, the severity of her injuries quickly became apparent.
Furthermore, Mohan said that, despite calls for emergency assistance, no ambulance arrived at the scene, leaving her with no choice but to arrange private transport to Mediclinic Newcastle.
“I screamed for someone to call the ambulance for Kiara, but the ambulance never came, and I organised a ride to Mediclinic Newcastle. I think Kiara had already died at the scene, but the doctors wanted to try and help her. I think because I needed some form of closure, they tried to resuscitate her, but Kiara was gone,” Mohan said.
In the wake of Kiara’s death, those who knew her have described a cheerful, warm and well-mannered child who brought joy to those around her. Neighbours remembered her as a bubbly little girl with an easy smile and playful nature.
“She was such a bubbly and beautiful child,” one resident said.
However, alongside the grief, anger and frustration have emerged among residents who believe the tragedy could have been prevented.
According to people living at the Suryaville Flats, concerns over the condition of municipal skips had been raised more than once, with residents claiming that previous incidents had already highlighted the danger.
“The skips are in a terrible condition, and we have reported it more than once. Two years ago, a man broke his leg when he came to discard refuse, and it fell on him, and still nothing has been done to rectify the issue, and little Kiara now had to die because of the Municipality’s neglect,” one resident claimed.
For Mohan, the pain of losing her daughter is now coupled with a demand for accountability.
She stressed that her call for answers is not about financial compensation, but about ensuring that no other family experiences the same loss.
“I know I will never get my daughter back, and I do not want the Municipality’s money. I want them to answer for what has happened. In a few months’ time, other children will forget what happened to Kiara, and this could happen again,” Mohan said.
In response, the Newcastle Municipality has since extended its condolences to the bereaved family, stating that the matter is being treated with the necessary seriousness.
The municipality confirmed that an investigation is underway to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
“Once the Municipality has received the necessary information and clarity on the matter, a formal municipal statement will be issued,” said municipal spokesperson Musa Ngcobo.
Furthermore, Newcastle SAPS spokesperson Lizzy Arumugam also confirmed that a case had been formally opened in connection with Kiara’s death.
“Police investigations are underway,” Arumugam said.
As the formal processes now begin, investigators will be tasked with determining not only how the skip fell, but whether existing safety and maintenance obligations were adequately met. This will be central to establishing responsibility, particularly in a residential setting where municipal equipment is expected to be properly secured and managed.

For residents of the Suryaville Flats, however, the matter extends beyond the outcome of an investigation. They are now looking for visible corrective action to ensure that any risks linked to municipal skips are addressed before another family is forced to endure a similar tragedy.
Newcastillian News extends our condolences to the family of the deceased.

I pray that the family gets closure in this matter and that the long arm of the law takes the necessary action against those responsible . Gone to soon . My sincere condolences goes out to the family
Condolences to the family.
A few questions come to mind, how is it possible that the bin area was not cornered off? Why are children playing in that area, what happened to cause the bin to fall over? A bin of that weight doesn’t just fall over. It would take a few people to push it over as the mother said it took 3 adults to lift it off the child. So let’s not assume the municipality is in fault here, let’s ask ourselves all the necessary questions. As a parent I would also want answers. However as a parent I wouldn’t allow my children to play in an area which was already unsafe. Not blaming the mother but ask yourselves why are children permitted to play in the area, yes not all places have yards for children to play. However we as parents have a responsibility to tell our children not to play in unsafe areas. I hope the other parents in the flats don’t allow their children to play in the bin area again.
This is SO sad. 🙁 Condolences to family and loved ones of a soul that was taken way too early.
Kiara is my mum’s friends granddaughter, Kiara’s mum (Lisa) grew up in front of me. This is so sad knowing it could have been avoided, The Mohan family is kind and caring so my deepest sympathies goes out to them in this devastating time.
My sincere condolences to all the family and friends of this dear little angel God be with you all it is so very heartbreaking for the parents to loose a child you never get over it my thoughts and prayers are with you
This is such a tragic loss to the Mohan and Khaki family. Our sympathy goes out to you. These skip bins where replaced 3 years ago by the current ward 3 councilor after years of pleading with previous council for bins that where rusted to the extent that refuse could not even be put into the bins cause of the big holes that where in them
Its sad really to hear how people are blaming the parents and the councilor and dnt even knw if they can blame the municipality. That’s not for me to decide but there are persons that are using this tragidy as a platform to make their political party famous, should I say, which is just not right. Can we atleast leave this family to grieve and not turn this into political gain. If there is someone to be held responsible let the municipality and the police do their job.
A child lost her life for negligence..The municipality needs to pay the price for this innocent Soul….Her parents needs to sue them😡😡😡….They need answers..RIP BEAUTIFUL ANGEL 😇 ❤️ 🙏🙏🙏
