Mediclinic Newcastle is proud to share encouraging news with the Newcastle community: the hospital has been rated “better than expected” overall by Discovery Health in its Hospital Care assessment, when compared with other private hospitals across South Africa.

This recognition reflects the commitment of the hospital’s doctors, nurses, support teams and leadership to providing care that is safe, effective, patient-centred and efficient.

Discovery Health’s Hospital Care assessment measures how private general hospitals perform against important quality-of-care indicators, with the aim of driving continuous improvement across the healthcare sector.

The rating is designed to help patients make better-informed decisions and is based on the experiences and feedback of members of medical schemes administered by Discovery Health.

The overall Hospital Care rating is made up of four key measures: patient experience, readmission rates, mortality, and efficiency.

Mediclinic Newcastle performed exceptionally well in three of these four categories:

  • Experience: Better than expected
  • Readmission: Better than expected
  • Mortality: As expected
  • Efficiency: Better than expected

A better than expected rating in patient experience means that patients rated their care more positively than at most other hospitals in the country. In readmissions, it means fewer unplanned returns to hospital within 30 days of discharge for the conditions measured.

In efficiency, it reflects strong stewardship of resources during an admission, helping to support affordable, high-value care.

Japie Greyling, Hospital General Manager of Mediclinic Newcastle, responded with humility to the recognition:

“We are deeply grateful for this positive rating from Discovery Health. It is encouraging for our hospital, but more importantly, it is a tribute to the dedication of our teams who work every day to serve patients with compassion, professionalism and care.”

Furthermore, Greyling said the result belongs to the entire hospital community.

“This recognition is not about one individual or one department. It reflects the collective effort of our nurses, doctors, administrative teams, support services and leadership, all working together with the patient at the centre of everything we do.”

He added that the hospital remains committed to ongoing improvement.

“While we are proud to have been rated better than expected overall, we receive this result with humility. We know that quality healthcare requires constant reflection, learning and improvement. Our commitment is to continue raising the standard of care for the people of Newcastle and the surrounding communities.”

For the Newcastle community, the rating offers reassurance that high-quality care is available close to home.

It also highlights Mediclinic Newcastle’s role as a trusted healthcare provider in Northern KwaZulu-Natal.

“We thank our patients and the broader community for their trust,” said Greyling. “Their feedback helps us improve, and their confidence in our hospital inspires us to keep striving for excellence.”

This achievement marks an important milestone for Mediclinic Newcastle and reinforces its ongoing mission to deliver healthcare that is clinically sound, patient-focused and worthy of the community it serves.
