A security guard was found murdered outside a municipal substation on Asparagus Avenue, Newcastle, in the early hours of Monday, 11 May 2026.

According to officials at the scene, the discovery was made shortly before 06:00 during scheduled overnight inspections conducted by the security company that employed him.

Upon arrival, colleagues found the guard unresponsive outside the substation premises and immediately alerted police.

Officers responded shortly thereafter, securing the scene and initiating preliminary investigations, while forensic teams began processing the area for potential evidence.

Newcastillian News contacted Newcastle SAPS spokesperson Lizzy Arumugam for further clarity; however, she indicated that she was unable to comment at this stage, pending feedback from the officers who attended the scene.

Consequently, several key details, including the precise cause of death and whether any infrastructure was targeted, remain unconfirmed as investigations continue.

In the absence of official confirmation, a municipal official who was present at the scene, and who spoke on condition of anonymity, outlined a possible motive.

“While the police still need to investigate the matter fully, it is believed that the suspects could potentially have come to the substation to steal wiring and other infrastructure from the substation, and the security guard was possibly murdered when he tried to stop them.”

The official further noted that the targeting of electrical infrastructure continues to place strain on municipalities across KwaZulu-Natal, particularly as substations remain vulnerable due to their often-isolated locations and the value of copper components.

“This happens more than it should, and now a security guard possibly paid the price for this crime.”

As investigators continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding the incident, attention is likely to turn to both the immediate security measures in place at the facility and the broader vulnerabilities facing municipal infrastructure sites.

The outcome of the investigation may prove critical in determining whether additional safeguards or operational adjustments are required to mitigate similar risks. In the absence of confirmed details, the case underscores the complex challenges faced by those tasked with protecting essential public assets under often-isolated, high-risk conditions.

  1. Loss of life is sad indeed. While this sub station is guarded, the Fernwood Club House which was completely refurbished through an insurance claim many years, it remains in a derelict state, the building is total vandalized, water is flowing daily contributing to water loss yet there is a security guard stationed at the Club House in a 24 hour basis.
