While the future of ArcelorMittal South Africa’s Newcastle Works remains under discussion, the company has reported an unexpected surge of job seekers arriving at the KwaZulu-Natal facility following the circulation of misleading information on social media.

The influx appears to have been driven by false claims encouraging artisans, drivers and general labourers to submit their CVs directly at the plant, under the impression that operations were resuming and recruitment was underway.

Addressing the situation, ArcelorMittal South Africa’s Head of Corporate Communications, Tami Didiza, moved to clarify the company’s position and expressed concern over the spread of misinformation within the Newcastle community.

“ArcelorMittal Newcastle remains under Care and Maintenance, and there is no recruitment activity currently taking place at the facility,” Didiza stated

He further explained that the company is not accepting CVs, nor has it authorised any individuals, community groups, or third parties to solicit or collect job applications on its behalf, whether at the plant gates or elsewhere.

Therefore, the company has urged members of the public to disregard unverified reports from unofficial sources, noting that such misinformation has already resulted in unnecessary financial strain and logistical challenges for job seekers.

Reports indicate that several individuals travelled to the Newcastle Works by taxi, only to be turned away upon arrival.

Didiza further emphasised that no members of the public should travel to any ArcelorMittal facility unless formally and directly engaged through official company processes. He reiterated that any updates regarding operational status or employment opportunities would be communicated exclusively through verified corporate channels, including formal media statements and recognised company platforms.

Community members and prospective employees have been encouraged to verify information directly with ArcelorMittal South Africa and to refrain from sharing unconfirmed claims that may perpetuate further confusion.

Despite the current absence of vacancies, Newcastillian News previously reported in March 2026 that ArcelorMittal South Africa, in collaboration with the broader ArcelorMittal Group and the Industrial Development Corporation, is engaged in advanced discussions aimed at securing the long-term future of the Newcastle steelworks.

According to the company, these discussions are based on a non-binding term sheet relating to a potential transaction and remain subject to the conclusion of definitive agreements, as well as the necessary regulatory and internal approvals.
