Inclement weather is expected across parts of KwaZulu-Natal on Thursday, 26 March 2026, after the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a Level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms.
The warning follows the development of a surface trough over the western interior, coupled with upper-air perturbations, which are expected to drive widespread showers and thunderstorms across the province as the day unfolds.

According to SAWS, some of the forecast storms may intensify, particularly over the western and central northern parts of KwaZulu-Natal. These conditions could bring heavy downpours, damaging winds, excessive lightning and hail, increasing the likelihood of localised disruptive impacts.
SAWS has cautioned that the adverse weather may result in localised damage to infrastructure and informal settlements, while low-lying roads and bridges may become vulnerable to flooding.
Hazardous driving conditions are also expected, with slippery road surfaces and reduced visibility raising the risk of minor motor vehicle accidents.
Areas expected to be affected by weather include:
- Vryheid
- Ladysmith
- Indaka
- Dannhauser
- Underberg
- eDube
- Utrecht
- Dundee
- Newcastle
- Mooi River
- Estcourt
- Msinga
- uMngeni
In light of the warning, SAWS has urged the public to exercise caution, particularly when travelling through low-lying areas or attempting to cross bridges and roads that may be susceptible to flooding or sinkholes.
Residents have also been advised to avoid outdoor activities where possible, as lightning, hail and flash flooding may pose a risk of injury or loss of life. Pet owners and motorists are further encouraged to take precautionary steps to protect animals and vehicles from the anticipated conditions.
As the weather system moves across the province, the latest forecast serves as a reminder of the volatility often associated with late-summer conditions in KwaZulu-Natal.
Although the Level 2 warning points to largely localised impacts, the combination of heavy rainfall, strong winds and lightning highlights the need for continued vigilance, especially in vulnerable areas.
Community members are also encouraged to remain alert to changing conditions, as weather patterns can shift unexpectedly.

Monitoring updates from official weather authorities and credible news platforms will remain important throughout the day, with preparedness and adherence to official safety guidance likely to play a key role in reducing disruption and protecting lives.
